Hot Air Balloon Bridal Shower – Part 2

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Looking for ideas for a hot air ballon themed bridal or baby shower? I am sharing my ideas from my own personal bridal shower that includes everything from decorations, games, favours, invitations and more. Incase you missed part 1 of this feature, it’s here.

Finding decorations for my shower wasn’t exactly easy. Hot air balloon bridal showers aren’t so popular. All of the decoration ideas I had come across involved some pretty hanging decoration but the ceilings in the hall were super high. This meant that there was absolutely no way I was going to be hanging anything, and So what’s a girl to do?

I had bought all kinds of tiny baskets from Michaels for $1.50 each, without knowing what I was going to do with them. I decided to attach a pink balloon to each basket and have them placed throughout the room. I used glass pebbles that I bought at the dollar store in the bottom of the basket to make sure my baskets wouldn’t end up flying away. It worked out great!

Each table had a money tree centrepiece that was set in a woven basket with a pink ribbon tied around it. I also made these table numbers which coordinated with my invitations and favour tags.

I had a hard time trying to think of favours for my guests, but after brainstorming with my fellow FMNDD Team members, I decided to do champagne glasses. It is tradition for the hot air balloon pilot to have a champagne toast after every flight, so the idea seemed perfect. Many balloonists recite the Balloonist’s Blessing, also known as ‘The Balloonists Prayer’ along with the champagne toast:

The winds have welcomed you with softness
The sun has blessed you with its warm hands
You have flown so high and so well
That God has joined you in your laughter
and set you gently back into the loving arms of mother earth.

I wanted to incorporate this poem into my favours so I added it onto my tags. And incase you were wondering, the pilot did recite this poem during our champagne toast after our hot air balloon ride.

Along with the champagne glasses everyone got a hot air balloon shaped lollipop from
Sweet Lollipop Shop on Etsy.

The older kids got a paint by number set that had a picture of a hot air balloon. The younger kids got a goodie bag that included a colouring book with a picture of a hot air balloon on the front, bubbles, crayons and a fun transportation themed puzzle that had – you guessed it – a hot air balloon on it . The babies that attended got this super cute hot air balloon toy from Toys R Us.

I forgot to mention a game I used when I wrote the last post. I filled a jar with mini marshmallows and had each guest guess how many marshmallows were inside. I really wanted to make cloud shaped marshmallows, but I ran out of time! Here’s the recipe from Cupcakes are Ugly Muffins, maybe I’ll try it some other time.

Hot Air Balloon Bridal Shower – Part 1

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

I had a difficult time trying to come up with a theme for my bridal shower. After weeks of contemplating, I realized that a hot air balloon themed shower would be perfect. After all, my husband did propose to me in a hot air balloon! So I went to the internet to get some ideas and needless to say, I was a little disappointed. There weren’t very many ideas to collect so I had to brainstorm a lot.

First thing on the to do list were the invitations. Lucky for me I have some experience in this area. ;) But I am extremely critical when I make things for myself!

I knew I wanted to add a quote. I scoured the internet and found this quote by Richard Bach:

“A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks. When we feel safe enough to open the locks, our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are; we can be loved for who we are and not for who we’re pretending to be. Each unveils the best part of the other. No matter what else goes wrong around us, with that one person we’re safe in our own paradise. Our soulmate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction. When we’re two balloons, and together our direction is up, chances are we’ve found the right person. Our soulmate is the one who makes life come to life.”

Ok I may have shortened it a bit. It was way too long to include all of that on an invitation!

There are not many shower games that involve balloons out there. Or at least ones you can do with older people and/or a large group (I had 75 people!) So I came up with this cool idea for a game using a cork board. I put everyone’s names on pins and had them guess on a map where we landed in our hot air balloon. It worked out great and it doubled as a seating plan!

It was easy to make! I just covered the cork board with bristol board that I had painted with the blue cloud background, painted the pink piece of bristol board to match my colour scheme and added a map of the area where we landed. Getting the map was the hard part. I threw on some letters from the dollar store, added the hot air balloon decorations and voila!

And of course the food had to have a hot air balloon theme too. I had a cookie and candy table which meant I had to have hot air balloon shaped cookies! Some people thought I was crazy (and at 11:00 the night before when I was decorating all 84 cookies, I would have agreed) but I loved them. I am no Martha Sterwart, or cookie decorator by any means, but I think I did a pretty good job! My mom, sister and brother in law even made me pink cotton candy! I might be spoiled.

Obviously there has to be cupcakes. Lots of delicious cupcakes. I made these cloud shaped cupcake toppers using white metallic cardstock and my cricut. They were super easy I think they’re adorable!! And the cupcakes were yummy too!

I will be sharing the rest of the shower and my other awesome hot air balloon shower ideas soon!

Also thanks to my family and friends for the pictures! I was way too busy that day to take any!!
